Siena is surrounded by the most wonderful landscapes among vineyards, hills and small medieval villages. Here is a selection of the best:
THE CASTLE OF MONTERIGGIONI: this village is located on a hill a few kilometres from Siena. In 1200 it had 14 towers and two access gates. Do not miss the walk along the ancient medieval walls.
SAN GIMIGNANO: a village nestling in the Sienese hills of Val D’Elsa founded in the late Middle Ages as a rest stop along the Via Francigena. he beautiful Piazza della Cisterna has remained almost intact over the centuries.
THE HILLS OF CHIANTI: the heart of Tuscany where one of the most famous wines in the world is produced: Chianti. Between Florence and Siena, you will be spoiled by splendid views, small villages, dense woods and expanses of vineyards
MONTALCINO:protected by its ancient walls, this medieval town is dominated by the Rocca, a mighty fortress where you can admire a breath-taking view from the ramparts. Montalcino also produces one of the most famous wines in the world: Brunello.
PIENZA: small Renaissance village 20 km from Montalcino, perched on the top of a hill dominating the entire Val D’Orcia and offering the most wondrous views.
